Eugène-Léon Ropp (1830 - 1907) acquired a patent for a cherry wood pipe in 1869. In 1870, he founded a workshop to manufacture this type of pipe in Büssingen (Bussang, Vosges). Around 1893, the company moved to the former Sicard mill (which is part of the community of Baume-les-Dames - Doubs department, Upper Burgundy - since 1895).

The pipes also enjoyed great success in export. Shortly before 1914, Ropp appointed A. Frankau & Co. (BBB) as the exclusive distributor in the United Kingdom and its colonies.

In 1917, a workshop in Saint-Claude was acquired to initiate the production of briar pipes. In 1923, a small building was added nearby Saint-Claude, serving as a polishing workshop.

Although briar pipes gained good acceptance, cherry wood pipes were the cornerstone of Ropp until the company closed definitively in September 1991. The company came under the ownership of Cuty-Fort Entreprises (Chacom, Jeantet, Vuillard, Jean Lacroix...) in 1994.
