Seattle, located on the northwest coast of the United States, is a city shaped by engineering and innovation — cradle of Boeing and also the birthplace of one of the most distinctive pipes of the 20th century: the Kirsten Pipe. Its story began in 1936, when Professor Frederick Kirsten, an aeronautical engineer and creator of Boeing’s first wind tunnel, designed a metal-chamber pipe intended to cool and condense the smoke. Advised by his doctor to stop smoking, Kirsten instead sought a technical solution rather than giving up the pleasure of his pipe.
The result was a fully dismantlable pipe composed of an aluminum body, a valve, and an interchangeable briar bowl whose interior traps moisture and residues, providing a cleaner and drier smoke. Throughout its history, the Kirsten Pipe Company, based in Seattle, Washington, developed several generations and models —Standard, Medium, Large, Companion, and Thrifty— introducing innovations such as rubber seals and anodized finishes in gold, silver, or black.
To speak of a Kirsten is to speak of the union between science and tradition —a pipe that bears the mark of American ingenuity and the experimental spirit of its era. A unique design that transcends trends and remains an essential piece for any collector who values the technical and aesthetic history of the pipe.
